History
The Ivy League is an athletic conference consisting of eight private namely Brown University, Columbia University, Cornell University, Dartmouth College, Harvard University, the University of Pennsylvania, Princeton University, and Yale University. Most historians agree that Caswell Adams coined the term in a 1937. The Colleges & Universities that comprise the Ivy League boast centuries of history, tradition, and prestige. Each of the eight elite Colleges & Universities have rich academic histories, with Harvard dating back as far as 1636. But, the actual Ivy League itself was not established until 1954 as an athletic conference. Today, though, the term is used much more broadly and has much less to do with sports. In modern days, the term Ivy League also has connotations of academic excellence, selectivity in admissions, and social elitism.
